New dedicated freight processing facility to open at Avalon Airport
Victoria is set for a new freight processing facility servicing businesses and shoppers in Melbourne and the greater Geelong region. Minister for Jobs and Industry Natalie Hutchins flagged the $8 million facility will overhaul freight processing and handling efficiency at Avalon Airport.
The facility will run 24/7, with the ability to process over 100,000 tonnes of domestic and international freight annually — a ten-fold increase on the 10,000 tonne volume handled in 2023.
“This new facility will create jobs, attract new businesses, get trucks off the road and expand trade and commerce opportunities for the whole region,” said Hutchins.

Queensland Government seeks Torres freight EOI’s
The State government of Queensland has issued a call-out for expressions of interest with a view to provide Outer Torres Strait Island (OTSI) communities with more reliable sea freight.
As noted by government officials, the region’s relatively inaccessibility means the cost of shipping essential goods to OTSI is much higher than other supply chains. The tender process — opened by the Department of Transport and Main Roads via QTenders — closes for submissions at midnight on Friday, 22 November 2024.

Freight Rates to USA & Europe Drop By Up To 40% as Australian Rates Rise
While container shipments are seeing big drops in freight charges along US and UK routes, the same can’t be said for Australia.
Asia-Australia routes are currently subject to ‘gravity defying’ freight rates, with spot rates upwards of USD1000/TEU in a month, as additional extra-loaders are scheduled to meet demand.
Nikki Asia attributes this volatility to a number of factors, including the Red Sea crisis, tariff uncertainties and overseas inventory replenishment.
